The development of three-dimensional graphics allows us to look anew at familiar forms of art. The cinema, animated cartoons, and advertising are rapidly going over to working with 3D technologies. One of the directions which is not sufficiently developed is the three-dimensional portrait.
“It seems to me that this is interesting only to a relatively narrow circle of customers. There are now the technologies which allow a very accurate reproduction of a person, but they are expensive and are used mainly in the cinema” explains Stanislav Svarichevsky, General Director of the ALS Group, studios working in three-dimensional graphics
The service for creating three-dimensional graphics really is expensive. The present cost of creating one three-dimensional portrait (recorded on a disk) varies from $100 to $1,000. For comparison a normal portrait by a professional artist cost $1,000, and by an artist on Nevsky Prospect – 500-1,000 roubles.
The computer and talent
In practice the business for producing three-dimensional portraits does warrant the initial investment.
It’s necessary to own the programs for creating three-dimensional graphics, or to hire someone who owns these programs.
What’s needed is a computer and the appropriate software. A software licence costs several thousand dollars. But in St Petersburg at the present time, even many of the professional 3D studios work with pirate software, buying the disk in shops in town for no more than 200 roubles.
The basic costs for an entrepreneur who decides to open a studio for three-dimensional portraits would go on advertising. As the service would be new and unknown it would be necessary to order advertising articles describing what is special abut such a portrait. Promotion of the service at the first stage could reach $1,000.
Considering the pace of development of the technologies, the process of preparing a portrait could be much more affordable in the future.
A three-dimensional present
Producing a 3D portrait to order could become good business. Any computer owner is a potential client of the studio for a three-dimensional portrait. Instead of a static picture, it’s pleasant to enjoy a three-dimensional portrait made to order. According to the client’s wishes the portrait can be static or animated, i.e. to make the image move in three dimensions. The program allows the person to be reproduced sufficiently accurately. The clients of the 3D portrait artist could be all those who are looking for an original present for their nearest and dearest, and prepared to spend enough money to make such an advanced present.
“I regard the idea of a three-dimensional portrait as quite interesting,” comments Maria Vasilyev, art director of the studio “Eskis”, “but for such a project to be profitable you need enough people ready to pay for the service. At the present time it’s difficult to find so many clients in St Petersburg.”
